No more calls, we have a winner! March 7, 2010 R. Keighron (Mt. Holly, NC) Have been looking since Christmas for a replacement portable DVD player. The $50 loss leaders were attractive but wanted something more substantial. Have had the Coby tablet for about a month and am very pleased with the unit.
As others have said, it comes with a full suite of accesories. 2 around the neck headphones, a carrier that fits on the back of a car seat, home charger, car charger, and a/v cables. Allows for BOTH output from AND input to as a monitor; a switch on the side selects. Takes a video input from a tuner (ie to use as a TV) very well and looks good. Lightweight, decent sound, good picture, well designed. Have to be careful with the backstand as it could easily snap off. A cut above the rest. Only criticism is over the remote; all keys are equal size and shape so you have to have a light on to use it.
I've had two of these for over a year.... February 26, 2010 Regina Williams (ZinZinnati, Ohio) I have had two of these for over a year and they are still awesome. We have not treated them kindly at all. They have been left in the hot car, left in a cold car, found on the floor of the car, dropped, left running and abused in every way a 12 and 5 year old boy can abuse them. they are still going strong.
A Must Have for Parents February 25, 2010 Mommy educator (Mt Laurel, NJ) Love, love this tablet! I was pleasantly surprised to see all the accessories for one low price! It is fabulous!!! My son calls it his "TV" and takes it everywhere! A true gem and a must have for every parent. It is fabulous!!!!!!!!!!! You will not be disappointed.
Impressed so far. February 21, 2010 J. Rowland (NYC) So far I have to say I am impressed initially. That said, I have only owned it a week. I do fear that this dvd player may not last too long given spotty reliability reports in the long run. Only time will tell. It seems some people have bad luck, some people just don't realize how hard they are on this type of portable device, and some of it is likely Coby being a mediocre off brand. One certainly doesn't see as many complaints about Sony products of this nature. Nonetheless, I am not one to buy extended warranties but I did buy the 2 year plan from SquareTrade for about $10. Squaretrade has positive reviews here on Amazon and elsewhere. I think in this case the portable dvd player is an item built for an extended warranty, particularly keeping Coby's bad reputation and poor customer service in mind. I plan on using my warranty before the two years are up. I would even bet on it, lol. It's not that this item is that bad, it's pretty decent honestly, it's just the nature of the portable/budget beast and Coby.
All of the reliability issues aside, this is about as good as it gets if you are looking for a portable tablet style dvd player at a budget price. It comes with more stuff than most will likely ever use, or know how to use, lol. I like that it has an internal battery (some actually don't and AREN'T truly portable) and so far I have been able to get about 3.5 hrs out f mine on the battery. Good for the car or the plane or whatever. The sound is loud. Louder than most actually. The car "bag" is okay. It works but nothing fancy and yes you do have to the dvd player out of the bag to load it. The car charger cable is decent but likely too short for many. I have a MINI Cooper so no problem for my daughter in the back seat in a small car. The ear phones (both included pairs) are useless and uncomfortable. Other people said this was so and I assumed they were just being picky. Nope, the earphones are that bad, lol. I like that two people can plug in earphones separately though. Also this dvd player can be used as a monitor for your portable games or other items since it had video in and comes with the cables. I haven't even mentioned all the extra stuff this comes with. Remote, remote batteries, indoor charger, aux sound cable and more...Outstanding!
One thing to keep in mind is the form factor. Do you really need or want the tablet style? I did and love it, especially for the back of the car headrest, but you may not and may be better off with the clam shell style depending on what and where you intend to use it.
So we will see if this one lasts more than a year...or a month...
Fits my needs perfectly! February 17, 2010 elaine (Houston, TX) I got a DVD recorder and this DVD player so I could record and watch all my shows during my workouts at the gym. I've had it for just over a month now and use it 4-5 nights a week. It does everything I wanted it for. I probably run it about 1.5 to 2 hours each time. So far, I have not had the battery run out on me. I just make sure it has a full charge each day. I wish the buttons were laid out a little differently on the remote (play button close to the ff/rew button). I've dropped the remote a few times because the buttons aren't close enough to ff thru the commercials and hit play without shifting the remote in my hand. And I haven't figured out how to get to the dvd menu using the buttons on the front.
I bought velcro straps to be able to secure the bag onto the different machines at the gym since the straps on the bag aren't long enough. I haven't tried it, but they are probably ok for attaching to the headrest in a car.
No complaints about the picture, but I have to make sure the player is at the right angle to be able to see the screen.
I thought $89 was a bit pricey, but I'm happy with it b/c it's exactly what I was looking for and it seems like it's the only tablet style portable player on the market right now.
